RB Leipzig vs Atletico Madrid – Champions League Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction
Seven teams are left in UEFA’s biggest club competition (after PSG’s qualification for the semifinals), as RB Leipzig are taking on Atletico Madrid on Thursday the 13th of August, 2020, at Estádio José Alvalade, in Lisbon, in the second quarterfinal.
RB Leipzig have not played an official game since June 26, when they beat Augsburg 1-2 on the road, on the last day of the Bundesliga season. Timo Werner scored both their goals back then, his last for the club, as soon after that he moved to Chelsea. Leipzig finished third in the Bundesliga, earning themselves a spot in next season’s Champions League group stage. Back in February and March, in the round of 16, they beat Tottenham twice, 0-1 in London, and 3-0 at home, earning a ticket to the quarterfinals in the most emphatic way possible. Before that, they had three wins, two draws and one loss in the group stage, scoring two goals each in five of their six games. The only match in which they failed to score was their 0-2 home defeat to Olympique Lyon. Their form, including a draw with Wolfsburg in a friendly game, reads; DWLDW. Coach Julian Nagelsmann played a 3-4-2-1 formation back in June, in their last official match. As previously mentioned, Werner is gone, for good, but Emil Forsberg has recovered from his latest injury and should play some role in the game.
The championship in Spain ended more than three weeks later than the Bundesliga in Germany, meaning that Atlético Madrid’s last official match was on July 19. Just like RB Leipzig, Diego Simeone’s team finished third in La Liga, guaranteeing themselves a spot in the Champions League group stage for yet another season. Their form at the end of the La Liga season read; DWWDW. Their last game was a 1-1 home draw with Real Sociedad. Back in the round of 16, in February and March, Atlético eliminated Liverpool in a truly unforgettable way; after winning 1-0 at home, they were 1-0 down after 90 minutes at Anfield, 2-0 down four minutes into extra-time, but… miraculously they not only qualified, but they even won the game(!), 2-3. Coach Simeone played a 4-4-2 formation four weeks ago, in their last official game, against Real Sociedad. Luckily for him, he has the entire roster at his disposal.
RB Leipzig and Atlético Madrid have never faced each other before.
If Leipzig still had Werner, things would be very different. Also, Atlético are much more experienced, they have been at this CL stage over and over again this past decade, and this should play some role.
A 0-1 victory for Atlético is predicted at full-time.
