Manchester United vs Manchester City – League Cup
Later today, Manchester United will take on Manchester City for the first leg of the semifinal League Cup fixture. United will be returning from a goalless draw against Wolves after the embarrassing defeat to Arsenal. Ole Gunnar’s United side have not been able to find a win in their last two matches but will look to do so later today when they face Manchester City.
Ole will likely use a 4-2-3-1 formation which will see Anthony Martial lead the attack at the head of the ‘Christmas’ tree. Behind him a Rashford – Jesse Lingard – James combination is likely while Fred and Matic will cover United’s defense.
Romero will likely be in goal for United to allow De Gea have some time to reflect over his recent performances. United has been plagued with a string of inconsistent results, some of them due to goal keeping errors or United’s inability to find any form of quality in themselves. The Red Devils have 2L, 1D & 3W in their last six games in all competitions; DLWWLW. We certainly know that whenever Marcus Rashford or Anthony Martial fail to turn up, United has a very low chance of winning any match. Their over reliance on the duo has seen them slip up several times this season when both fail to perform as expected. Looking at their Premier League statistics, more than 50% of United’s goals have come from the duo of Rashford (12) and Anthony Martial (7). Ole Gunnar will be hoping the two put up a top-notch performance tonight to stand any chance against a strong City side.
Meanwhile, Manchester City come off a 4-1 victory in their last match (FA Cup) against Port Vale. The Championship side thought they would stand a chance of stealing a draw or even more – a win after picking up an equalizer in the 35th minute. Rather they were outclassed by City’s superior quality. A prolific strike from Sergio Aguero restored the lead for ‘The Citizens’ in the 42nd minute before Taylor Harwood-Bellis stretched the lead in the 58th minute. Phil Foden’s 76th minute goal was the final nail in the coffin to seal Vale’s fate. Pep will line up with a 4-3-3 as usual with a Mahrez- Aguero- Sterling leading the attack. Claudio Bravo will be in goal while a midfield of Silva – Rodrigo – Kevin De Bruyne may be seen.
The last time both sides met was in the Premier League in December 2019. Surprisingly Manchester United got away with a 2-1 win thanks to Marcus Rashford (P 23’) and Anthony Martial (29’). Otamendi’s 85th minute goal couldn’t inspire a come-back for ‘The Citizens’ as it remained 2-1 at full-time. Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard missed Saturday’s FA Cup third round against Wolves due to illness and both remain doubts while Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba remain sidelined for Manchester United. David Silva who returned to captain his side against Port Vale will likely feature once more for City.
We tip a victory for Manchester City tonight. However, should any of Marcus Rashford or Anthony Martial score then we might see a surprising result once again.
