Barcelona vs Athletic Bilbao – La Liga Match Preview, Kick-Off Time & Match Prediction

Match Day 31 continues with Barcelona taking on Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday the 23rd of June, 2020, at the Camp Nou.

Barcelona tried everything to win the game at Sánchez Pizjuán on Friday, but at the end they were obliged to settle for a goalless draw, just one point. They remained at the top of the table, on 65 points from 30 games, waiting for the outcome of the clash between Real Madrid and Real Sociedad, on Saturday. Barcelona’s current form reads; DWWWL. They have 20W, 5D and 5L, having scored 69 goals by far more than any other team in the league), and conceded 31, which leaves them with a 38GD. Coach Quique Setién played a 4-4-2 formation on Friday. Truth is, the Blaugrana created way fewer than normal chances to score. Interestingly, despite scoring in their previous game, youngster Ansu Fati spent the entire match in Seville on the bench.

Athletic Bilbao scored early on Saturday, just in the 7th minute, and they protected that lead against Real Betis, to earn all three points. That was their first win since the restart, having drawn with Atlético Madrid and Eibar. Their current form reads; WDDWL. Following Saturday’s games, Athletic were on 42 points from 30 La Liga matches, 9th on the table. The Bilbao side have 10W, 12D and 8L, having scored 33 goals and conceded just 26, which leaves them with a 7GD. Coach Gaizka Garitano played a 4-2-3-1 formation against Betis, with Iñaki Williams up front. It was centre-back Íñigo Martínez who scored the only goal of the match, his first of the season, in 27 La Liga appearances.

The most recent match between these two is Athletic’s 1-0 Copa del Rey win in February. Back in August 2019 they had beaten Barcelona by the same score, in times when the 2019-20 La Liga season was still young. Barcelona have not beaten Athletic since March 2018, as both last season’s games between these two ended in a draw.

Barcelona should bounce back and win the game. They simply can’t afford to drop points in a second consecutive game at this stage of the season.

A 2-1 victory for Barcelona is predicted at full-time.

Date: Tuesday, 23rd of June, 2020.

Venue: Camp Nou

Kick-off time: 22:00 (GMT+2).
