La Liga’s (LL) two biggest strugglers may have finally met their match as Leganés and Espanyol face off with both having collected just two wins apiece at home and on the road respectively. The hosts, as a result, lament a 33.33% win rate (W2, L4) as a favourite at home.
Leganés’ crippling inability to win second halves (2H: D6, L11) continues to cost them points both home and away, with a -12 goal difference after the 60 minute mark (-5 at home) ensuring they have lost on six occasions despite being level at half-time (35.29%).
Like their hosts, Espanyol have covered the +1 goal handicap on just six occasions this LL season – the joint-fewest in the league after 17 weeks. In fact, Espanyol have even failed to beat the +1.5 handicap in their last four away losses, conceding a half-time deficit in three of them.
For that, they can thank a defence that has strung together seven consecutive LL matches without a clean sheet for the second time in 2019/20. Similarly to their hosts, Espanyol have lacked the grit to fight back from a deficit, and have lost at both half-time and full-time in eight of their 17 league matches so far.
Players to watch: With two assists in his last four appearances, Roque Mesa could be key to Leganés’ goal scoring chances. Meanwhile, Sergi Darder has recorded Espanyol’s first goal in two of his last five starts.
Stat attack: Both teams have scored in ten of the last 12 LL matches involving either side.
The last two H2Hs have seen a Leganés player sent off.
Referee Javier Alberola Rojas is awarding fewer yellow cards (2.78 per LL game) than any other referee this season.
