Chelsea vs Southampton

A 2-0 victory against Tottenham last weekend has left Chelsea feeling confident ahead of their Boxing Day match. Frank Lampard will be looking to take another 3 points off Southampton. Chelsea sit 4th place with 32 points and a victory against The Saints will take them further away from Sheffield United – depending on the results from Sheffield vs Watford.

Willian will try to replicate the form which saw him score two goals against Tottenham when Chelsea. Curling a right-footed shot past Tottenham’s keeper and then a penalty to get the early Christmas party started for The Blues. Lampard will likely use the same starting lineup as his last match with duo of Tammy Abraham (CF) and Willian on the field again.

The 22-year-old English striker with Nigerian origins, Tammy Abraham will be looking to extend his goal tally after failing to score in Chelsea’s last match. The tall center forward has 11 goals and 3 assist this season and has been touted as the new “Drogba”. However, if he fails to hit the target, we might see him replaced with Michy Batshuayi as Lampard did 80 minutes into their last match.

Lampard will probably keep the same defense which kept a clean sheet against Spurs. We can conclude Chelsea is very fortunate to remain 4th place looking at their last six games: WLLWLL. It appears the results of other clubs behind Chelsea have worked in their favor. Southampton will be coming off an impressive 3-1 victory against Aston Villa in which Danny Ings scored twice (21’, 51’). Jack Stephens also got on the scores sheet 31 minutes into the game for The Saints. Their last six games has been WLLWWD which looks better compared to Chelsea’s, one would wonder why they sit 17th on the league table.

The last time both sides met Chelsea as in October this year. The match ended 4-1 with Tammy Abraham (17’), Mason Mount (24’), N’Golo Kante (40’) and Michy Batshuayi (89’) all getting on the scores sheet for Chelsea. Danny Ings got a consolation goal (30’) for Southampton. A total of 23 shots were taken in that game with Chelsea having 13 and Southampton 10. The blues also had a higher ball possession, 57% to Southampton’s 43% and completed more passes, 528 to 400 by Southampton.

Mateo Kovacic will be serving a yellow card suspension and won’t be available for Lampard while Ruben Loftus-Cheek remains sidelined with an Achilles tendon rupture. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton have no notable injury list and should be able to field their strongest IX. Chelsea is tipped to win by a wide margin once more in this Boxing day encounter.

English referee Jonathan Moss will kick off the match at exactly 3PM (UK Time).
