Match Day: 21
Out of nowhere, Southampton enter a new decade above the drop zone after three games without defeat (W2, D1), with the ‘Saints’ averaging 1.5 unanswered first-half goals across the two victories.
Curiously, each of Southampton’s home league wins in 2019 saw them score exactly twice in one half. The last league H2H at St Mary’s Stadium (W 2-1) falls into this group, marking the third home H2H in the PL from the last four to see them keep a second-half clean sheet.
Despite drawing at Norwich City on Saturday, Tottenham Hotspur have taken an encouraging seven points from the last possible nine as away-day favourites. The Londoners must be cautious later on though, as five of their last six goals conceded as PL away favourites have arrived beyond the hour mark.
Home and away, it is five league wins from eight for ‘Spurs’, with each of those wins producing over 2.5 goals. Both of the away victories in that sequence saw Tottenham win the first half with a clean sheet, and register 1.5 first-half goals on average.
Players to watch: Danny Ings has been Southampton’s first scorer in five of their last seven PL home games, with three of the last four in that group coming after the break.
Set-piece wizard Christian Eriksen netted Tottenham’s first equaliser at Norwich on Saturday, and in turn, his last five goals from direct free kicks have been equalisers.
Stat attack: Southampton have lost four of the last seven league H2Hs played at home, with all the defeats seeing exactly two first-half goals (either way).
Saturday’s draw at Norwich was Tottenham’s first stalemate in any PL away match entered as favourites since April 2018.
Only one of the last eight individual halves of H2H league action have ended separating the sides by a margin of over 1.5 goals.
