A two-game unbeaten run (W1, D1) has taken Watford off the foot of the table, and the Premier League (PL) strugglers have now conceded the opener just once across their last four games (W1, D2, L1). At home they’ve recorded a clean sheet in four of their last six league fixtures (W1, D3, L2), which puts them in good stead to go three H2Hs unbeaten (W2).
The hosts have been poor in the first half at home though, netting just once before half-time across their home league games this term. Five of their nine PL home matches were goalless at the break (HT: D6, L3), although a -4 goal difference after the 60th minute at home shows they’re prone to a late collapse.
Aston Villa travel here on a five-game winless away run that has seen them concede at least two goals each time (D1, L4). They scored in three of those games though, and 66.67% of their away league fixtures this term have now seen both teams score.
Unlike their hosts, the visitors start well and have been trailing at half-time just once on their travels this PL campaign (HT: W3, D5, L1). That’s mainly due to conceding just one away goal in the opening half hour this league season, although a -8 goal difference in the final 30 minutes of away games shows their main weakness.
Players to watch: Gerard Deulofeu has netted 14 PL goals since January 2018, more than any other Watford player during that time – the last two were match openers.
Jack Grealish has been Villa’s first goalscorer in the previous four PL games he’s got on the scoresheet.
Stat attack: Three of Watford’s last five PL games featured a penalty.
Villa are yet to record a PL away clean sheet this term.
There’s been under 2.5 goals in 63.16% of Watford’s PL games this season.
